A beautiful, new statue was recently unveiled to commemorate Katie Wearie's Tree
It has never been established who Katie Wearie was and a number of stories abound.
One possibility was that she was called Katie Weir and 'Wearie' was added, while another possibility was that she was a retired cattle drover who sat under the canopy of leaves to rest, suggesting she was 'weary' (or tired) hence Wearie.
The original tree blew down on Guy Fawkes night in 1911 but a sapling taken from the ancient tree was planted. In 1982, and showing signs of weakness, another fresh cutting was planted, thus a third generation stands at the location.
