Called Historical Cities, the site enables users to browse around google maps containing markers for locations in the cities (or towns). When the user clicks on a marker, a photograph or video is displayed along with background historical information relating to the place, street or subject of the photo.
The user can click on links to view larger images or navigate to either the source of images or videos.
I now have Edinburgh, New York City, London, San Francisco and Linlithgow with plans to add more.
When the page is displayed with the map, there is a filter on the right hand side of the page which displays the markers based on year groupings (ie 1800s, 1900-1919 etc) as well as a search box. If you submit keyword(s), ie "avenue", results are returned. Clicking on the result displays the marker and the map is focused on the marker.
This has been a labour of love as I am really interested in history and started by building a site for the history of Edinburgh.
I am very appreciative of the number of people, especially flickr users, who have been very pro-active in providing access to photographs.
You can find the site at www.historicalcities.co.uk
